Why the roll-top closure exists
A zipper is a row of holes. No matter how good the fabric is, sustained rain eventually works through the zipper track, which is why every purpose-built dry bag uses a roll closure instead. Rolling the collar creates a folded labyrinth that water cannot climb, and the side-release buckles pull the fold tight. Three folds is the working minimum for a genuine seal; two is a style choice. It is also why roll-tops have a secondary benefit — the pack adjusts in volume. Roll it twice for a full load, five times for a light one, and the bag stays compact either way.
What to check on the spec
Whether the seams are welded or sewn decides how waterproof the bag really is; a roll-top on a sewn, uncoated body is a styling detail, not a seal. Check whether the buckles clip side to side across the roll, which seals properly, or front to back to a fixed anchor, which is faster but leaves the ends open. And check laptop access, since a roll-top means unrolling the whole collar every time — the better commuter versions add a side zipper straight to the sleeve.
Placing a logo on a rolling panel
The top four to six inches of the front panel disappear into the roll, so the imprint has to sit low and centered or move to a side panel. Send us the artwork dimensions early and we will mark the safe area on the proof. For the fully waterproof end of the range see waterproof backpacks and the water resistant tag; Urban Peak carries four roll-top styles including dry bag and cooler variants.
