What folds down, and what you give up
A packable backpack reaches its small folded size by removing everything rigid. No frame sheet, no molded back panel, thin unpadded or lightly padded straps, and a 20D to 70D ripstop nylon body instead of the 600D polyester on a standard work pack. Loaded with a jacket, a water bottle, and a few souvenirs it carries perfectly well. Loaded with a laptop and a stack of books it sags and the straps dig in. Buy it for what it is: a spare bag that lives in a suitcase or a desk drawer until it is needed.
What separates a good one from a gimmick
Check the folded size honestly — some styles claim packable and fold to the size of a loaf of bread, which defeats the purpose. Check that the stuff pocket is attached to the bag rather than a loose sack that gets lost on the first trip. Look for bar-tacked strap anchors and a ripstop weave, because thin fabric fails at stress points first. And check whether the zipper pulls are large enough to use, since ultralight hardware is often too small for cold hands.
